UX & UI Design for Apps

Wireframes, prototypes and pixel-perfect interfaces for mobile apps, SaaS products and dashboards. I'm Gary Simmons, a senior UX and UI designer in Brighton who also writes production code, which means I deliver designs that developers can actually build.

01 UX

User experience design

Interfaces fail quietly: Users don't file bug reports, they just leave. UX design is the work that stops that happening, and it starts long before anything looks pretty. The deliverables are practical at every stage, so you always have something to react to, test and share.

  1. Research & discovery

Who the users are, what they're trying to do, and where the current product or process fails them. Interviews, analytics and honest questions.

  2. User journeys & flows

The routes through the product mapped end to end, so every screen has a reason to exist and nothing important hides four taps deep.

  3. Wireframes

Fast, low-fidelity layouts that get the structure right before design polish makes changes expensive.

  4. Prototypes & testing

Clickable Figma prototypes real users can try, so the expensive lessons get learned before development starts.

02 UI

User interface design

Once the structure works, the interface makes it feel effortless. I design interfaces that are clear, accessible and consistent, and because I build for the web myself, everything is specified the way developers actually need it.

1

Mobile apps

iOS and Android interfaces that respect each platform's conventions while keeping your product unmistakably yours.

2

SaaS & web apps

Products people use for hours need calm, legible interfaces. Information hierarchy over decoration, every time.

3

Dashboards & data

Charts, tables and controls designed so the numbers mean something at a glance, not after a training session.

4

Design systems

Component libraries with tokens, states and usage rules, so the tenth screen is as consistent as the first.

5

Accessibility built in

Contrast, focus states, touch targets and screen-reader behaviour handled from the first draft, not retrofitted for an audit.

6

Developer-ready handoff

Organised Figma files, real specs and a designer who answers build questions in a developer's language.

03 The difference

A designer who codes

Plenty of portfolios look good in Dribbble shots. The gap shows up in production: Designs that ignore edge cases, states nobody specified, and components that fall apart with real data. Twenty years of designing and building means I design for the messy version of reality.

A.

Developer-literate

I write production code, so I know which design decisions get expensive before they reach a sprint.

B.

Real content, real states

Empty states, error states, long names, slow connections: designed, not discovered in QA.

C.

Senior, hands-on

No juniors and no hand-offs. The person you brief is the person moving the pixels.

D.

Flexible engagement

Project-based or embedded with your team for a sprint or a quarter. Brighton-based, working with product teams across the UK.

04 Questions

Questions product teams ask

Do you design and develop apps, or just design them?

My core offer is design: UX, UI and prototypes, delivered developer-ready. I build for the web myself, so for web apps and dashboards I can often take the front-end further, and for native mobile apps I work closely with fellow freelancers or your development team, and stay available throughout the build.

What tools do you work in?

Figma for design, prototyping and handoff, with organised files your team can actually navigate. Research and testing tools flex to fit the project and the budget.

Can you work with our existing product and dev team?

Yes, and it’s where I do some of my best work. I can embed with an in-house team or agency, pick up an existing design system, or bring order to one that’s drifted. I’m equally happy owning design end-to-end for a founder.

How do you price UX/UI work?

Fixed price for well-defined projects like an MVP design or a marketing-to-product redesign, and a day rate for embedded or ongoing work. Either way you’ll know the cost before we start.

Apps rarely exist alone. When your product needs a brand to match, my brand identity design keeps product and marketing speaking the same language, and my web design services cover the marketing site that sells it, including Shopify when you sell direct.

Building something?

Whether it’s a new app, a SaaS product that’s outgrown its interface, or a dashboard your users quietly hate, tell me about it and you’ll hear back within a working day.
